New faculty inspire verisimilitude

Joshua Floyd
Staff Writer

Face it: Upstate is growing.  A moment ago, the cafeteria suffered from an influx of hundreds of incoming freshman. Just before that, the construction crew stopped merrily ripping a giant hole in the ground and went on their lunch break.  Where there was once empty space, the University is finding a way to expand within it.  Last fall, roadwork permeated the campus environs; now, the Health Education Complex is under construction.  The expansion is one of the most rapid in the state, as far as universities go.

It turns out I’m not a cosmetologist…

Erin DeZerne
Humor Columnist

I wasn’t always a bad girl. I was a girl scout once—Really! Somewhere in the DeZerne family vaults, I still have the tiny brown vest, matching beanie, and god-awful orange tie to show for my years in service to The Cookie.

But things change, as they are wont to do, and so I found myself deviating from the straight-and-narrow path late one summer morning, trimming a lion’s mane out of my Spitz-Chow’s thick, red fur. I don’t remember what necessitated Sophie’s haircut at that hour, but it had been so pressing that I could not wait until morning. The rest of the house had long since gone to bed, and so I was the only one awake: a solitary soul crouched on the floor of a dark living room, gleaming Fiskars in hand.

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” hits the right nerve

Joshua Floyd
Staff Writer

The theatre’s lights came on and brightened the dark stage for the Shoestring Player’s production of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and the first thing seen was the grays and blues crisscrossed with white tile-stripes that filled the stage.  Standing like a monolith—decked completely with cold, polished windows and stark fluorescent light—was the nurse’s station of the asylum Jack Nicholson brought to life in the film version of this standout play.

Dear Margaret…

     Dear
Margaret,

I think my boyfriend might be cheating on me. We don’t talk as much as we used to, and whenever I try to call, he’s usually busy or he sounds distracted. I love him, but I’m confused. I think there’s another woman involved. How should I handle this?

Dear Confused,

Gerhard’s brings Germany to Spartanburg

Jennifer Burgess
Managing Editor

Beside Converse Cinemas is a restaurant with a kind staff, diverse menu and interesting décor. It is Gerhard’s Café and you won’t be disappointed by its German and Austrian cuisine.

I ate in the casual dining area, strewn with authentic accents like a wild boar’s head and a centerpiece well which dominated the center of the room. A large shield adorned the ceiling. The many decorations meshed into one warm, inviting atmosphere.

The media is frenzied to publicize their favorite presidential hopefuls such as Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton.  But one can only make proper discernments with balanced information.  Attempting to do this, each upcoming issue of The Carolinian will highlight a different presidential “hopeful” from either the Democratic or Republican parties.
